Deep valleys and high mountains are everywhere in the South Island. Mt Cook (3754m high) is in the spectacular Mt Cook National Park surrounded by glaciers on the west coast and a host of skifields to the east. The snow lies here all year. The roads are often impassable in the winter due to snowfalls.
